SCA secures US contract award with Kosmos Energy for an onshore umbilical storage carousel

Subsea Cable Assets (SCA) has secured its first contract with US deepwater exploration and production company, Kosmos Energy, to deliver an onshore umbilical storage carousel.

The Netherlands-headquartered business manufactures and operates one of the largest fleets of cable carousels in the sector. This new award for a newly designed 1,000-ton carousel will support umbilical storage and handling operations for an onshore project in Mobile, Alabama, USA.

SCA’s team will engineer, manufacture and deliver the carousel system, which is scheduled for Q4 2026. The carousel will be delivered by SCA and assembled on site under the supervision of SCA’s specialist team. Once installed, it will provide controlled quayside storage for Kosmos Energy’s subsea umbilical system, supporting safe storage and readiness for future deployment.

SCA COO Sil de Rijke said: “Securing this contract with Kosmos Energy further demonstrates our capability in this specialist area of cable handling and storage. SCA supplies specialist equipment - carousels, loading towers and tensioners - and brings the experienced crews and project expertise to deploy it effectively, across offshore wind, interconnector, oil and gas and subsea cable projects worldwide.

“From supplying cable handling equipment for single cable transfers to supporting full spooling campaigns, onshore and offshore, our approach combines proven equipment with project planning, mobilisation and operational execution to keep projects moving safely and on schedule. We look forward to supporting a successful campaign for Kosmos Energy.” SCA Group, through its joint ventures and subsidiaries, operates advanced engineering and manufacturing facilities in Europe and Dubai. The facilities have supported the group in delivering over 50 carousels worldwide, including some of the largest modular cable transports in the market.

Following a recent internal strategic review, SCA (Subsea Cable Assets) has decided to strengthen its leadership structure with the clear objective of supporting continued growth, improving organizational scalability, and positioning the company for its next phase of development.

As part of this transition, Hendrik ten Hoeve has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and will focus on providing structure, strategic direction, and long-term scalability for the organization.

In addition, Sil de Rijke will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO), taking responsibility for day-to-day operations, commercial activities, project execution, and the ongoing alignment of SCA’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

Within this new structure, Alex van Doorn will step back from day-to-day management and move into a Board advisory role. In this capacity, Lex will continue to actively support the company by contributing to strategy, long-term business development, and continuity at board level.

“SCA has grown rapidly over recent years, and this next step is about ensuring the company is well positioned for sustainable growth,” said Alex van Doorn. “I have full confidence in Sil and Hendrik to lead SCA operationally and strategically. By moving into an advisory role, I can continue to add value where my focus is most effective, while enabling the new leadership team to further shape SCA’s future.”

With this strengthened leadership team, SCA aims to reinforce its organizational foundations, maintain its growth momentum, and continue delivering long-term value to its clients and partners in the subsea cable industry.

Netherlands headquartered Subsea Cable Assets (SCA) has won its first framework contract with German grid operator 50 Hertz Transmission GmbH, secured through a competitive European tender process, to deliver four of its newly designed cable storage and handling systems.

The innovative SCA solution has been developed specifically to support 50Hertz’s offshore and onshore electricity grid infrastructure, which ensures safe and reliable transmission of high-voltage power to homes and businesses across the north and east of Germany.

The contract scope includes providing onshore cable handling equipment for offshore applications, covering the engineering, manufacturing, delivery, installation and commissioning of four systems, including all associated loading equipment. SCA’s unique solution has specifically designed partition walls that allow both ends of a cable to remain accessible for testing, even within warehouse and deck space constraints, a challenge its team overcame through a smart carousel-based design.

SCA manufactured and operates the largest fleet of cable carousels in the sector, including modular systems capable of handling up to 12,000 tonnes. All SCA carousels are electrically driven, rather than hydraulic, and, in this particular case, engineered for low floor bearing loads and long-term reliability, supporting 25+ years of service.

SCA managing director Sil de Rijke said: “Our team’s experience in equipment design and manufacturing, cable handling and storage, has allowed us to engineer a system that meets 50Hertz’s stringent size and operational parameters. SCA provides a combination of advanced electrical drives, and proven roller technology to provide a scalable, low-maintenance solution capable of reliable, right-first-time operation. It demonstrates how we can integrate equipment, software, engineering expertise and our manufacturing capabilities into a fully connected capability for our clients.”

SCA Group, through its joint ventures and subsidiaries, operates advanced engineering and manufacturing facilities in Europe and Dubai. The facilities have supported the group in delivering over 45 carousels worldwide, including some of the largest modular cable transports in the market.

The business also recently won a N-Sea Group contract covering the full design, manufacturing, delivery and commissioning of a cable installation deck spread for the cable-laying vessel Altera. This new 50Hertz award highlights the company’s ability to provide fully integrated carousel solutions, from design and fabrication to commissioning and operational support, across international energy projects.

We are pleased to be working with Maritime Developments Limited (MDL) on the delivery of a 10,000Te carousel package, including the associated drive systems, loading tower and tensioner.

The scope of the project covers the engineering, manufacturing, testing and delivery of a carousel system designed for both offshore and onshore operations, supporting MDL’s cable installation activities in line with defined technical and operational requirements.

The package comprises a 5,000Te offshore carousel with an extension to 10,000Te onshore capacity, integrated drive and control systems, and the required loading and handling equipment. The project is progressing through its planned engineering and manufacturing phases.

We value the constructive collaboration with MDL and look forward to continuing the project together.
